Graphic Design & Mechanical Reproduction

These posters once had authority, now there are thousands of new variants. People change them to fit in with their own identity. They were used to control the majority by the minority, but now they are used by the majority. They aim to be humorous rather than to have authority.

All these examples show that the use of this style of poster is a bit over done, causing the original to lose its authority.

This is the example I gave in the mechanical reproduction task, but I thought I would find some more examples of how it has been re-used, not just with a different cities name, but with the love heart replaced with a different example, such as in the Facebook version. The original I love NY logo was designed to be reproduced, but now that has gone even further with the whole idea behind the logo being reproduced and changed to fit peoples identities as they show off what they love.

These well known motivational posters by anthonyburrill have sparked graphic designers to create many thousands more examples with their own quotes in them.

From a google search, I found so many more examples, all set out in a similar way. typographical-posters

This one caught my attention as at first I thought it is kind of ironic as this type of poster isn't original, but when you look at it closer you see that it actually says "Don't try to be original, just try to be good". And as this style of poster has been reproduced so many times, the original has lost its aura, as there are so many copies of motivational posters out there to choose from. And as shown in this example, it seems that the graphic designers are more interested in their piece looking good than the actual message being shown, so the meaning behind them has been lost.

In the first year for a group project we made inspirational posters inspired by the Anthony Burrill ones, now looking back, this was such an over done idea!

Graphic design is a medium born out of mechanical reproduction. It is designed to be reproduced, but some pieces can have this aura - such as limited edition prints seeming more special, and therefore, they sell for more.

This is an example of a limited edition print from  ilovetypography.com
